Grout Care - Grout Cleaning

Grout Cleaning: for everyday care, mould problems and building tidy-ups

ELIMINATE PROBLEMATIC GROUT GRIME & DIRT

Black mould growth on tile grout is a common problem in most UK households. It’s an issue most commonly caused by dampness and poor ventilation within the bathroom and shower, but can also occur in kitchens around sinks where water persists. Besides black mould, grouted surfaces can also become coated with soap and cosmetic residues, hard water staining, organic deposits and more that add up to an unsanitary surface that must be cleaned.

For every day, general cleaning and grout grime removal, we would recommend our rapid Grout Cleaner – it’s ideal for quick, regular cleaning and to keep on top of non problematic grout lines. It’s not always that quick or easy to remove black mould from grout, but help is at hand with our powerful Grout Mould Remover, an effective cleaning formula that attacks black mould and eliminates the problem, leaving a professional and clean finish every time.

Finally, grout residue, commonly referred to as ‘grout haze’ is often left after a new tiled floor or wall is grouted. Although this will generally disappear over time, it can be a problem and is also quite unsightly – especially on a pristine newly installed tiled bathroom for example. Luckily, Universeal have an expert formulation that is designed to tackle the problem; Grout Haze Remover is used by trades and experts routinely to remove all excess traces of grout residue from tiled surfaces. It’s powerful targeted formula won’t damage tiles but will easily eliminate grout haze in a highly effective manner.

Grout Care - Grout Colour

Grout Colour: enhance and improve with a colour sealer

SEALING COLOURANT FOR BOTH NEW AND OLD GROUT INSTALLATIONS

Grout can become permanently stained or damaged with age or abrasive cleaners – once it loses its appearance and performance, you are faced with two choices; either painstakingly dig it all out and re-apply new grout, or find a way to treat the old grout and make it like new. Luckily, the second option is both cheaper and quicker than the first, and thanks to the Universeal Grout & Colour range, it’s as simple as can be.

Universeal Grout Rescue Colour & Seal is the market leading grout repair formula that allows you to restore grout to a permanently sealed even coloured finish. Our unique grout colourant and sealer can restore even the dirtiest, ugly grout to a like new finish. This process will permanently colour and seal the grout to make the grout look even better than the day it was installed. Available in 10 stylish colours ranging from pure white to all black, Grout Rescue can also be used to transform a tiled area – changing the grout colour dramatically alters the overall appearance of the space!

Unlike many of the cheap, non technical products on the market, Grout Rescue is not a grout paint (all these do is paint on a colour that eventually comes off and offers no protection) but a fully effective, water resistant sealant that completely seals and protects your grout AS WELL AS adding a consistent colour finish – so when fully cured, it helps protect against mould, mildew and staining for up to 15 years. For optimal results, we recommend all grout to be colour sealed must be primed first with Grout Rescue Pre-Treatment – this easy to apply spray will remove dirt and grime and prep the surface so that Grout Rescue adheres perfectly.

Grout Care - Grout Sealing

Grout Sealing: protecting grout for less maintenance and cleaning

SIMPLE AND FAST PROTECTION FOR HASSLE FREE GROUTING

Grout is a porous substance, and even when treated upon application will eventually develop porosity – this leads to dirt and grime, and bacteria becoming attached to the surface which in turn leads to mould, black spots and staining. A well sealed grout is much more resistant to these problems, once properly sealed it will be resistant to oil and water staining and also creates a surface barrier that means dirt and grime cannot get a grip on the grout surface – making it much simpler to keep clean!

As mentioned above, you can seal AND colour grout with our market leading Grout Rescue formulation – but what about if you just want to seal and protect your grout without altering the appearance? Well, we have a specialist sealer for the task! Universeal Grout & Tile Protector is an aerosol solvent based tile grout sealer formula designed for deep penetration into grout. VOC compliant, it also has a 100% breathable formulation that allows the surface to breathe and prevents trapped moisture issues. Non-yellowing, it will not change the appearance of the surface – with good care practice, it is also long lasting and can protect grout for up to 20 years.

The easy to apply formula can be sprayed to both walls and floors, and is suitable for internal and external applications.

Grout Cleaning

Cleaning grout might seem like a low priority, but left unattended it can become a headache and the longer the problem persists, the harder it is to remove. For example, black mould growth on tile grout is a common problem in most UK households. It’s an issue most commonly caused by dampness and poor ventilation within the bathroom and shower. It’s important to remove black mould from the grout in your shower and bathroom. Aside from the cosmetic appearance, it can actually be a health hazard too.

Using a good everyday grout cleaner on your tiled surfaces will prevent the build up of dirt and grime and bacteria, so a good regime of grout care can virtually eliminate any grout cleaning problems.

It’s also important to note that after installing new wall and floor tiles it’s not uncommon for a residue of hard grout haze to be left on the tiled surface. This grout residue doesn’t only look unsightly, but it can also harbour dirt, making general cleaning more difficult until successfully removed. Grout haze can appear in the form of white powder, glossy patches or dull smears or streaks and is hard to remove without using the correct methods. You might read about various hacks online including vinegar solutions, but by far the easiest and most efficient way to remove grout haze from ceramic and porcelain tiles is with a specialist cleaning solution.

Grout Care

Grout Colour

Removing old grout and starting again can be both time-consuming and expensive, especially if you have to employ someone to do it for you! If the grout is still in good condition (eg no physical damage, gaps, cracks) then you can keep the grout and simply apply a colour sealer to renew the look and add back a protective barrier.

If grout is dirty or stained, apply a high quality colouring sealant that will permanently colour and seal the grout to make it look even better than the day it was installed. A tidy ‘good as new’ result and at the fraction of the time/cost as a replacement job.

You may also consider colouring your grout lines purely for appearance; creating a whole new look for a tiled area (eg, from white grout lines to black grout lines). The effect that changing grout colour is quite remarkable and with the added benefit of restoring tired or dirty finish to a consistent, block colour will genuinely make the tiled surfaces look like they are freshly installed. The end result of recolouring your grout lines will be impacted by amongst others; the original Grout colour, texture, grout width, artificial and natural lighting. As sealing grout colourants are permanent, it is not recommended for use around porous surfaces i.e. unglazed tiles and natural stone surfaces as it could permanently stain.

Grout colouring is primarily used for internal tiled surfaces, such as bathrooms, showers, wet rooms, kitchen splashbacks etc. It is also effective on tiled floors, from natural stone tiles to modern porcelain and ceramic engineered tiling.

Grout Care

Grout Sealing

Sealing wall and floor tile grout in your home can be very beneficial. This is particularly true in shower or bathroom areas where moisture, shampoo and soap residues can cause hard to remove staining and contamination. Sealing the grout in your shower is a relatively simple process that will prevent moisture from seeping between and under your tiles. Wet grout is a perfect place for dangerous mould and mildew to breed.

As tile grout is usually made up of a mixture of sand, cement and water it is naturally porous and absorbent. Due to this, you need an effective grout sealer that will penetrate and protect the grout, stopping mould and mildew forming. Universeal provide a range of sealers designed to seal and protect grout, and all of them offer full breath ability to ensure you have vapour transmission – this prevents moisture issues which lead to mould and mildew.

Ideally, you will need to seal your recently cleaned grout with a sealant that protects against oil and water based stains. Once you have correctly sealed your grout, you will benefit from reduced cleaning, less water stains and much easier cleaning regime. A well sealed grout will achieve beading up water which is easy to wipe away, and the tiles and grout stay clean for a very long time between cleaning, even if you live in a hard water area.
